Joy of all who sorrow by Peter Mavrommatis

Joy of all who sorrow

by Peter Mavrommatis on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 9:58pm

Many things happen in our lives that take away a most valuable gift, that of happiness. For this reason, contrary to the beliefs and perversions of those who put on airs of mourning and sadness, as if these are 'virtues', we request from the All-Holy Theotokos in the Supplicatory Canon (Παράκλησις), and through her to the Lord Himself,

Χαρᾶς μου τὴν καρδίαν, πλήρωσον, Παρθένε, ἡ τῆς χαρᾶς δεξαμένη τὸ πλήρωμα... (Fill my heart with gladness, Most holy Virgin lady, for you are she who received the abundant joy...)

The Holy Hymnographer makes further reference to the need for joy in one’s life singing,
τῆς ἀθυμίας τὴν ζάλην, διασκεδάσαι μου... (Disperse the storm of my grief, and the soul's most inward confusion...).

We therefore pray that we are delivered from any sadness. Because profound sorrow is not only undesired but the extreme opposite of how we ought to live, we pray again,

Ῥοήν μου τῶν δακρύων, μὴ ἀποποιήσῃς, ἡ τὸν παντὸς ἐκ προσώπου πᾶν δάκρυον, ἀφῃρηκότα... (Do not reject the streams of my many tears, Holy Virgin; for you gave birth to the One who dried all the tears, from all the faces of people...).

We continue,
(Pure one, fill my heart with happiness; bestow on me your spotless joy, for you have given birth to Him Who is the cause of joy.)
Joy is therefore not only seen as a valuable but is a necessary element of the life in Christ. Those who expect, want or present a morose attitude have simply misunderstood the Christian spirit which is one of joy and gladness – “I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people” (Luke 2:10), while Christ Himself prays on our behalf to the Father “that we may have My joy fulfilled in ourselves” (cf John 17:13).

The misunderstanding that exists is likely a result of identifying joy with sin and so many assume that Christ preaches against joy.

The Paraclesis however identifies joy with virtue and sin with sorrow.

Sadness is caused by spiritual trouble, while happiness presupposes the abandonment of sin -
Ἱκετεύω, Παρθένε, τὸν ψυχικὸν τάραχον, καὶ τῆς ἀθυμίας τὴν ζάλην, διασκεδάσαι μου... (I entreat you, O Virgin, disperse the storm of my grief, and the soul's most inward confusion, scatter it far from me...)
We see again, that joy and sin cannot co-exist:
- Χαρᾶς μου τὴν καρδίαν, πλήρωσον, Παρθένε, ἡ τῆς χαρᾶς δεξαμένη τὸ πλήρωμα, τῆς ἁμαρτίας τὴν λύπην, ἐξαφανίσασα. ... (Fill my heart with gladness, most holy Virgin lady, for you are she who received the abundant joy; take the grief of my sinfulness, and make it disappear.)
Consequently, irreproachable or perfect entertainment is not against the spirit of Christ.

Prayer attributed to St Columba

Let me bless almighty God,
whose power extends over sea and land,
whose angels watch over all.

Let me study sacred books to calm my soul:
I pray for peace,
kneeling at heaven's gates.

Let me do my daily work,
gathering seaweed, catching fish,
giving food to the poor.

Let me say my daily prayers,
sometimes chanting, sometimes quiet,
always thanking God.

Delightful it is to live
on a peaceful isle, in a quiet cell,
serving the King of kings.

I bend thy knee of my heart

As we all enter into the Christmas fast this Monday, let us remember that the children of Israel, needed to wander the Egyptian desert for forty days before seeing the Promised Land. Let us too, wander through the desert for forty days awaiting the arrival of Our Promised Land - Christ the New Born:

+ + +
O Lord Almighty, the God of our fathers Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and of their righteous seed; that hast made the heaven and the earth with all their adornment; that hast bound the sea with the word of thy commandment; that hast closed the abyss and sealed it with thy fearful and glorious name; whom all things revere and tremble before the face of thy power, because the magnificence of thy glory is unendurable and irresistible the wrath of thy threatening against sinners: the mercy of thy promise is both immeasurable and inscrutable; for thou art the Lord most high, compassionate, longsuffering, and most merciful, repenting of the evils of men.

Thou Lord, according to the abundance of thy goodness, hast proclaimed repentance and forgiveness to those that have sinned against thee, and in the multitude of thy kindness thou hast decreed for sinners repentance unto salvation. Surely thou, O Lord, the God of the just, hast not appointed repentance for the just, for Abraham and Isaac and Jacob who have not sinned against thee: but thou hast appointed repentance for me a sinner: for I have sinned above the number of the sand of the sea.

My transgressions are multiplied, O Lord, they are multiplied, and I am not worthy to look at or see the height of heaven, for the multitude of my iniquities, being bowed down by many iron bonds, so that I cannot uplift my head, and there is no release for me, because I have provoked thy anger, and have done evil before thee, not doing thy will, nor keeping thy commandments, but setting up abominations and multiplying offenses.

And now I bend thy knee of my heart, beseeching thy goodness: I have sinned, Lord, I have sinned, and I acknowledge my transgressions: but I pray and beseech thee, release me, Lord, release me, and destroy me not with my transgressions; keep not evils from me in anger for ever, nor condemn me to the lowest parts of the earth: because thou art God, the God of the repenting; and in me thou wilt show all thy benevolence, for that me unworthy thou wilt save, according to thy great mercy: and I will praise thee continually all the days of my life: for all the hosts of the heavens sings to thee, and thine is the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Ignite my heart, my Lord

"Open, O doors and bolts of my heart, that Christ the King of Glory may enter! Enter, O my Light, and enlighten my darkness; enter, O my Life, and resurrect my deadness; enter, O my Physician, and heal my wounds; enter, O Divine Fire, and burn up the thorns of my sins; ignite my inward parts and my heart with the flame of Thy love; enter, O my King, and destroy in me the kingdom of sin; sit on the throne of my heart and reign in me alone, O Thou, my King and my Lord”

- Prayer of St. Dimitry of Rostov

What joy awaits us!

O brethren, what joy awaits us!

O brethren, how small a price does our Lord ask of us to purchase this joy in which the angels bathe and in which the righteous swim! Only to fulfill a few of His short commandments that is the entire price!

O Lord Jesus, the all-miraculous source of our joy, our boast and our pleasure, our glory and our thanks, place Your finger on our mouths and do not allow a drop of muddy sorrow and temptations to poison us.

To You be glory and thanks always. Amen.

Our repentance ... together, lets pray

Repent of your ways, inhabitants of the earth. Behold, the eye of the Master of the world is keeping watch deep within you. Do not trust your seducible eyes, let the Eye illumine your way. Your eyes are curtains over the Eye of God.

Repentance is admission of the way of sin. Repentance opens up a new way. The penitent's eyes are open to two ways: to the way which he is going, and to the way he should be going.

There are more who feel repentant than there are who turn their wheels onto a new way. I tell you: the penitent must have two types of courage--he must have the courage to weep over his old way, and he must have the courage to prepare himself for a new way.

What good is it for you to feel repentant and still tread the old way? How do you describe a person who is drowning and shouts for help, but when help arrives will not grab hold of the life line? I liken such a person to you.

Repent of your yearning for this world and all that is in this world. For this world is the graveyard of your ancestors, which is gaping and waiting for you. Just a little longer and you will be ancestors and will yearn to hear the word "repentance," but you will not hear it.

Just as the wind begins blowing and carries off the mist before the sun, so will death carry you off before the face of God.

Repentance rejuvenates the heart and lengthens one's lifetime. The tears of a penitent wash darkness from his eyes, and give his eyes a childlike radiance. The eye of my lake is like the eye of a deer, always moist and radiant as a diamond. In truth, the moisture in the eyes drains the anger in the heart.

The soul in the penitent is like a new moon. A full moon must wane, a new moon must wax.

The penitent clears the weeds from the field of his soul, and the seed of goodness begins to grow.

Truly, the penitent is not one who laments over the evil deed he has committed, but one who laments over all the evil deeds that he is capable of committing. A wise landowner not only cuts the thornbush that has pricked him, but every thornbush on the field that is waiting to prick him.

O my Lord, make haste to show a new way to every penitent, after he scorns his old way.

O heavenly Mother, Bride of the All-Holy Spirit, bow down toward our heart, when we repent. Open the fountain of tears within us, that we may wash away the heavy clay, that saddens our eyes.

O All-Holy Spirit, blow and disperse the unclean stench from the soul of the penitent that has been choking him and lead him to repentance.

We bow down and beseech You, O Life-giving and Mighty Spirit!

Today, He hangs upon the Cross

Holy Thursday

The Passion

Lamentation in Arabic

by Fadi El-Hage

Hattip: NOCTOC

Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the Cross.
Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the Cross.
Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the Cross.

He who is King of the angels is arrayed in a crown of thorns.

He who wraps the heaven in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery.
He who in Jordan set Adam free receives blows upon his face.

The Bridegroom of the Church
is affixed to the cross with nails.

The Son of the Virgin is pierced by a spear

Pause for a moment ...

and remember His Mother. This year, Lent started on the same day that we commemorate the Softener of Evil Hearts icon (Feb 02/15). This week it is not just Christ who suffers His passion - according to the prophecy of St Symeon, Our Mother, the Mother of Our Lrd, was to experience . Below is my dedication to Our Mother and her Child, Our Lord. Let's pause and reflect over the Life of Christ through His mother's eyes and see why the Passion is also her passion; a personal interpretation of the Akathist dedicated to this icon:
 + + +

Softener of evil hearts icon. FD: Feb 02/15

Soften our evil hearts, O Theotokos, and quench the attacks of those who hate us and loose all straitness of our soul. For looking on thy holy icon we are filled with compunction by thy suffering and loving-kindness for us and we kiss thy wounds; we are filled with horror for the darts with which we wound thee. Let us not, O Mother of Compassion, according to the cruelty of our hearts, perish from the cruelty of heart of those near us, For thou art in truth the Softener of Evil Hearts.

Silent tears

We cry out with heartfelt emotion to the chosen Virgin Mary, far nobler than all the daughters of the earth, Mother of the Son of God, Who gave salvation to the world: Look at our life which is filled with every sorrow and remember the sorrow and pain which thou didst suffer as one born on earth with us, and do with us according to thy merciful heart, that we may cry unto thee:

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

An angel announced the birth of the Saviour of the world to the shepherds in Bethlehem and with the multitude of the heavenly hosts praised God, singing: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will among men!” But thou, O Mother of God, having nowhere to lay thy head, since there was no room in the inn, gave birth to thy first-born Son in a cave and, wrapping Him in swaddling clothes, laid Him in a manger.

Correggio, Nativity - Holy Night

Knowing the pain in thy heart, we cry out to thee:

Rejoice, for thou wast warmed by the breath of thine own beloved Son!
Rejoice, for thou didst wrap the eternal Child in swaddling clothes!
Rejoice, for thou didst nourish with thy milk the One who sustaineth the universe!
Rejoice, for thou didst turn a cave into a heaven!
Rejoice, for thou didst make thy throne upon the Cherubim!
Rejoice, for thou didst remain a virgin both in giving birth and after birth!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

Circumcision of Christ, Jan 1

Seeing the eternal Child swaddled and lying in a manger, the shepherds of Bethlehem came to worship Him and to relate that which the Angels told them about the Child. But Mary kept all these things in her heart. And after eight days had passed Jesus was circumcised, according to the law of Israel, as a man. Hymning thy humility and patience, O Theotokos, we sing to the Good God Eternal: Alleluia!

Meeting Simeon and Anna in the temple (Luke 2:21-38)

Having their understanding based on God and keeping the Law of the Lord, on the fortieth day when the days of purification were complete, His parents took Jesus to Jerusalem so that they could present Him before the Lord and offer sacrifice for Him according to the decree in the Law of the Lord. But we sing out to thee, O Theotokos, thus:

Rejoice, for thou didst take the Creator of the universe to the Temple in Jerusalem to fulfill the Law!
Rejoice, for thou didst there meet the Elder Simeon with joy!
Rejoice, thou only Pure and blessed one among women!
Rejoice, for with humility Thou didst carry thy cross adorned with sorrows!
Rejoice, for thou didst never disobey the will of God!
Rejoice, for thou didst reveal thyself as a model of patience and humility!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

The Presentation of Christ to the Temple, Feb 2

Thou wast strengthened with power from on high, O Mother of God, when thou dist hear the words of the Elder Simeon, when he said to thee: "Behold, this Child is destined to be the rise and fall of many in Israel. This is a sign which will be spoken against, and a sword will pierce thy very soul so that the thoughts of many may be revealed." And great sorrow entered the heart of the Theotokos, and with grief she cried out to God: Alleluia!

Matthew 2:7-15 The Flight into Egypt

Hastening to destroy the Child, Herod ordered the killing of all children in Bethlehem and its environs, from two years of age and under according to the time that he determined from the Magi. And behold, according to the command of God, the Elder Joseph was informed by an angel in a dream to flee with the Holy Family to Egypt and to remain there until the death of Herod. Therefore with compunction, we cry out to thee, O Theotokos:

Rejoice for thou didst bear the entire turmoil of exile!
Rejoice for all the idols fell in the land of Egypt not being able to endure the power of thy Son!
Rejoice for thou didst remain for seven years among the dishonorable pagans!
Rejoice, for thou didst arrive in Nazareth with the first-born Youth and with thy betrothed!
Rejoice, for thou didst live with the Elder Joseph the carpenter in poverty!
Rejoice, for thou didst spend all thy time in hard labors!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften our hearts and those of evil men!

A storm of sorrows whirled about the most pure Mother when they returned from Jerusalem, not finding the young man Jesus in the caravan. For this reason they returned to look for Him, and after three days they found Him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers listening to them and asking them questions. And His Mother asked Him, “Child, why hast Thou done this to us? Behold, Thy father and I suffered greatly looking for Thee.” And Jesus answered them, ” Why were ye looking for Me? Do ye not know about those things which My Father has entrusted unto Me?” And Thou, O Most Pure One, kept all these sayings in Thy heart, crying out to God: Alleluia!

Christ and the Storm in Galilee

The Mother of God heard that Jesus traveled through all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing all kinds of illness and infirmity among the people. And His reputation spread through all of Syria and they brought Him every kind of illness and the suffering and those tormented by demons and the paralyzed and He healed them. But thou, O Mother of God, knowing the prophecy, sorrowed in thy heart, knowing that very soon the time would come when Thy Son would present Himself as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. For this reason we bless thee, much-sorrowing Mother of God, crying out:

Rejoice, for thou didst give thy Son to the service of the Jewish people!
Rejoice, for thou didst sorrow in thy heart, but didst submit to the will of God!
Rejoice, for thou didst save the world from the deluge of sin!
Rejoice for thou didst crush the head of the ancient serpent!
Rejoice, for thou didst offer thyself as a living sacrifice to God!
Rejoice, O blessed one, the Lord is with Thee!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

Preaching the Kingdom of God on earth, Jesus exposed the arrogance of the Pharisees who imagined themselves to be righteous. So when they heard His parables they understood it was about themselves that He was speaking and they sought to arrest Him, but they feared the people who considered Him to be a prophet. Seeing all of this, the Mother of God sorrowed for her beloved Son and feared that they would kill Him, in affliction crying out: Alleluia!

Some of the Jews, seeing the resurrection of Lazarus, went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. And Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, said, “It will be better for us that one man die for the people, so that the whole nation would not perish.” From that day on they took counsel about how they would kill Him. But we cry out to thee, O Most Pure One:

Rejoice, thou who gavest birth to the Saviour of the world!
Rejoice, source of our salvation!
Rejoice, for thou wast chosen from birth to be the Mother of our Saviour!
Rejoice, Mother of God, destined for suffering!
Rejoice, O blessed one, who dost preside as Queen of Heaven!
Rejoice, O blessed one, thou who always prays for us!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

Once a preacher of the Word of God, and now a traitor, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles, went to the high priest to betray his Teacher. They listened to him, were exceedingly pleased and promised to give him thirty pieces of silver. But thou, O Mother of God, didst sorrow for thy beloved Son, and didst cry out in grief to God: Alleluia!

Taking part in the Last Supper with the disciples at which the Teacher washed their feet, thereby revealing an example of humility, Christ said to them, “One of you will betray Me.” But we, suffering with the Mother of God, cry out to Her:

Rejoice, Mother of God, languishing with the torture of thy heart!
Rejoice, Thou who didst suffer all in this most sorrowful vale!
Rejoice, Thou who didst find comfort in prayer!
Rejoice, joy of all who sorrow!
Rejoice, Thou who dost save us from the mire of sin!
Rejoice, vessel filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit!

Rejoice, much- sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

Desiring to show His love for the human race, the Lord Jesus Christ at the Mystical Supper, blessed and broke bread, and gave it to His disciples and apostles, saying: “Take, eat, this is My Body.” And taking the chalice and giving praise gave it to them saying: “All of you drink of this, this is My Blood of the New Covenant which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Thanking the compassionate God for His ineffable mercy to us, we sing to Him: Alleluia!

October 1: Russian icon of the Protection (Pokrov)

The Lord revealed a new sign of His mercy to His disciples when He promised to send them the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who would descend from the Father and would witness concerning Him. But to thee, O Mother of God, sanctified again on the day of Pentecost by the Holy Spirit, we cry:

Rejoice, mansion of the Holy Spirit!
Rejoice, brilliantly-illuminated bridal chamber!
Rejoice, spacious dwelling place of God the Word!
Rejoice, thou who didst open for us the gates of paradise by Thy giving of birth!
Rejoice, thou who didst reveal the sign of divine mercy Himself to us!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

Betrayal of Christ

It is at once very strange and sorrowful for us to hear how Judas Iscariot betrayed his Teacher and Lord with a kiss. Then the crowd and the commander and the servants of the Jews arrested Jesus, and bound Him, and led Him first to the chief priest Ananias, and then to the high priest Caiaphas. But thou, O Mother of God, expecting the death sentence for thy beloved Son, cried out to God: Alleluia!

All of the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium to Pilate, saying that He was a criminal. But Pilate, after questioning Him, told them that he could not find any fault at all in Him. But we cry out to thee with compunction, O Mother of God, who saw the slander of Thy Son:

Rejoice, thou whose heart was broken by woe!
Rejoice, for thou didst shed tears for thy Son!
Rejoice, thou who didst see thy beloved Child given over to trial!
Rejoice, for thou didst suffer everything without complaint like a true handmaiden of the Lord!
Rejoice, despite thy weeping and lamentation!
Rejoice, O Queen of Heaven and earth, who dost accept the prayers of thy servants!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

Procession of saints: mosaic in the Basilica of San Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna

All generations bless thee, who art more honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, our Lady and the Mother of our Redeemer, for thy birth-giving has brought joy to the whole world. But thou didst suffer the final great sorrow when thou saw thy beloved Son insulted, whipped, and sentenced to death. For this reason we present our heartfelt hymn to thee, O Most Pure One, singing to God Almighty: Alleluia!

Loquacious orators are not able to describe all of the suffering which Thou endured, our Saviour, such as when the soldiers placed a crown woven out of thorns on Thy head and dressed Thee in a purple robe, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and slapped Thee across the face. But we, Mother of God, recognizing thy suffering, cry out to thee:

Rejoice, thou who didst behold thy Son slain for our sake!
Rejoice, seeing Him dressed in purple and wearing a crown of thorns!
Rejoice, seeing Him tortured, whom thou didst nourish with thy milk!
Rejoice, thou who didst suffer His Passion together with Him!
Rejoice, thou who didst watch all His disciples forsake Him!
Rejoice, thou who didst see Him condemned by the judgement of the unrighteous!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

Wanting to save Jesus, Pilate said to the Jews, “We have a custom to release a prisoner on the feast of Passover. Do you want me to give you the King of the Jews?” All of them shouted, saying, “Not Him, but Barabbas!” We praise the great mercy of the Heavenly Father, Who so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son to death on the Cross in order to redeem us from eternal death, as we cry out to Him: Alleluia!

 Be a wall and a fortification unto us, O Lady, who are overburdened by sorrows and suffering. For thou thyself didst suffer hearing the Jews shouting, “Crucify, crucify Him!” Now hear us crying out unto thee: Rejoice, Mother of mercy, who wipest away every tear from those who suffer cruelly!

Rejoice, thou who grandest us tears of heartfelt compunction!
Rejoice, thou who savest lost sinners!
Rejoice, Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame!
Rejoice, thou who savest us from our passions!
Rejoice, thou who grandest comfort to broken hearts!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

We offer a hymn of heartfelt sorrow to the Saviour of the world for His voluntary Passion and carrying His Cross to Golgotha to be crucified. Standing at Jesus’ Cross are His Mother, Mary Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. But Jesus, seeing His Mother and His disciple whom He loved standing there, said to His disciple, “Behold thy mother!” And from that time the disciple took her into his family. But thou, O Mother of God, seeing Thy Son and Lord on the Cross was devastated, and cried out to God on high: Alleluia!

“O my Son and Pre-eternal God, Fashioner of all creation! O Lord, how canst Thou endure the suffering on the Cross?” the pure Virgin cried, saying: “By Thy awesome birth, O my Son, I have been exalted above all mothers, but woe is me! Now when I see Thee, my womb burns within me.”
But we shed tears remembering thee, and cry out to thee:

Rejoice, thou who was deprived of joy and merriment!
Rejoice, thou who didst see the voluntary passion of thy Son on the Cross!
Rejoice, thou who didst see thy beloved Son sore wounded!
Rejoice, ewe lamb, seeing thy Son as a lamb being led to slaughter!
Rejoice, thou who didst see the Deliverer of the wounds of soul and body covered with wounds!
Rejoice, thou who didst see thy Son rise from the dead!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!
O All-merciful Saviour, grant us mercy, breathing out Thy Spirit on the Cross and tearing up the handwriting of our sins. “Behold, my good Light, my God, is extinguished on the Cross!” the Virgin in great anguish exclaimed. “O Joseph, hasten to Pilate, approach him and ask him to take thy Teacher down from the Cross.” “Seeing Thy wounded Body, naked and without glory, on the Cross, O my Child, a sword has pierced my soul according to the prophecy of the Elder Simeon,” said the Mother of God, singing: Alleluia!
Hymning Thy mercifulness, O Lover of mankind, we bow down to Thy generous mercy, O Master. The Most Pure one said, “Wishing to save Thy creature, thou hast given Thyself over to death.” But by Thy resurrection, O Saviour, have mercy on all of us, while we address Thy most pure Mother:

Rejoice, thou who didst see the most good Lord dead and without breath!
Rejoice, thou who didst kiss the body of thy beloved Son!
Rejoice, thou who didst see thy Light as a naked and wounded corpse!
Rejoice, thou who didst place the Light of the world in the tomb!
Rejoice, thou who didst wrap His body in a new shroud!
Rejoice, thou who beheld His Resurrection from the dead!

Rejoice, much-sorrowing Mother of God, turn our sorrows into joy and soften the hearts of evil men!

Final Kontakion recited three times:
O All-hymned Mother, crushed by thy sorrow at the Cross of thy Son and God, accept our tears and expressions of sorrow and save from every sorrow, affliction, and eternal death, all those who hope in thine ineffable kindheartedness and cry out to God: Alleluia!

Holy Icon of Theotokos Threnody, Panagia "Thrinodousa"
c. 1860-1880, Deacon Ioasaf Athonites (died 1880), at the Holy Chapel of Theotokos Threnody in Olynthos, Halkidiki.
Repeat Oikos and Kontakion I:
 An angel announced the birth of the Saviour of the world to the shepherds in Bethlehem and with the multitude of the heavenly hosts praised God, singing: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will among men!” But thou, O Mother of God, having nowhere to lay thy head, since there was no room in the inn, gave birth to thy first-born Son in a cave and, wrapping Him in swaddling clothes, laid Him in a manger.

Final Prayer to the Most Holy Mother of God “The Softener of Evil Hearts”

O much sorrowing Mother of God, more highly exalted than all other maidens, according to thy purity and the multitude of thy suffering endured by thee on earth: Hearken to our sighs and soften the hearts of evil men, and protect us under the shelter of thy mercy. For we know no other refuge and ardent intercessor apart from thee, but as thou hast great boldness before the One who was born of thee, help and save us by thy prayers, that without offence we may attain the Heavenly Kingdom where, with all the saints, we will sing the thrice-holy hymn to One God Almighty in the Trinity, always now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

The Holy Passion of Our Saviour begins today ...

Holy Monday

Do not neglect your talent:

"may [God] increase"

Joseph means may [God] increase.

Having realised, O my soul, the hour of the end, and remembering the cutting down of the fig tree, work therefore most diligently, O wretched soul, with the talent, which was given to you, in vigilance and crying aloud:

"May we not remain outside the Bridal Chamber of Christ".

Why are You heedless, O my miserable soul? All have received equal Grace from God; increase accordingly the talent given to you with the help of Christ, singing:

"All the works of the Lord, bless the Lord."

Oh my soul, you have heard the condemnation of him, who hid his talent; likewise, do not hide away the word of God. Proclaim his wonders, so that, abounding in grace, You may enter into the joy of Your Lord.

May thy lamp shine brightly, O my soul; and like the lamps of the five virgins, may it overflow with the oil of compassion; and so thou shalt find open before thee the door of Christ's bridal chamber.

Since I,

O Bridegroom Christ,

have permitted my soul to slumber in indolence, I do not possess the flaming lamp of virtues; and like the foolish virgins, I wander, when it is the time for work.

O Master,
do not close for me Your heart of compassion; but awaken me, shaking off my darkening sleep, and bringing me in with the prudent Virgins to Your Bridal Chamber, where there is the clarity of song, from those who feast, and unceasingly cry out:

"O Lord, Glory to You."

Make haste, my soul, thy Master shall be swift as the lightning that shines across the heaven.

Make haste, then, and be ready.

Behold, O Nymfios ...

As the Lord was going to his voluntary passion,
He said to the apostles on the way:

Behold, we go up to Jerusalem,
and the son of man shall be delivered up,
as it is written of him.
Come, therefore, let us also go with him, purified in mind.
Let us be crucified with him and die through him
To the pleasures of this life.
Then we shall live with him and hear him say:

I go no more to the earthly Jerusalem to suffer,
But to my Father and your Father,
To my God and your God.
I shall raise you up to the Jerusalem on high,
In the kingdom of heaven.

We have reached the saving passion of Christ our God.
Let us, the faithful, glorify his ineffable forbearance,
That in his compassion he may raise us up who were dead in sin, For he is good and loves mankind.

Going to your passion, o Lord,
You took your disciples aside and reassured them:

How have you forgotten the words that I once spoke?
Is it not written:
A prophet cannot be killed but in Jerusalem?
Now is the time of which I told you.
Behold, I am betrayed into the hands of sinners to be mocked.
They will nail me to the cross, and deliver me up to burial,
Regarding me, as a dead man, a thing of loathing.

Yet, take courage, for I will arise on the third day,
Giving to the faithful joy and life everlasting!

Jesus, the Bread of Life

(An akathist for Holy Communion)
Many thanks to my friend Jonathan who prepares an Eikos daily and shares with us.
The full Akathist will be completed over the next few weeks.

Chosen Bridegroom of our hearts and souls, through Your incarnation and death on the cross You have betrothed all mankind to Yourself forever and have given us as a pledge of eternal life Your most pure Body and Blood. Lo! At Your call, I though unworthy, dare to approach Your divine Table, and struck by its majesty, I cry:

Jesus, God of my heart,
come and unite me to Yourself forever!

You sent down Your Angel to the Prophet Isaiah with a live coal from the heavenly altar that his lips might be purified thereby, when, beholding You seated upon the throne, he was distressed over his impurity. And how shall I, who am defiled in body and soul, dare to approach to partake of Your divine Mysteries for communion except You Yourself purify me from on high? Wherefore, I cry out to You from the depths of my soul:

Jesus most good, touch also mine impure lips with the fire of Your grace;
Jesus, burn the thorns of my many transgressions;
Jesus, create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me.
Jesus, lead my poor soul out of the prison of the passions;
Jesus, destroy in me impure thoughts and evil lusts;
Jesus, guide my feeble steps to the path of Your commandments.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

Greatly desiring to eat a last Passover with Your disciples before Your Passion, that in the midst thereof You might give them the last and greatest pledge of Your love, You sent two of them to Jerusalem two days before You, that thus they might prepare it. Hence, learning how we, too, ought to prepare ourselves to eat of the divine Passover which is Your Body and Blood, I cry out to You in thanksgiving: Alleluia!

"Loose thy sandles from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground," You did say unto Moses from out of the bush which burned yet was not consumed by Your unseen presence therein. The vessel which contains Your Body and Blood is greater and more holy indeed than the unburnt bush, but I am dust, unclean and sold under sin. Wherefore, with humility and faith I cry out to You: Jesus almighty, strip from me the old man and all his works. Jesus, slay within me the seed of corruption which makes its nest within me!

Jesus, break the bonds of sin whereby the enemy has bound me.
Jesus, grant me a humble heart and a broken spirit;
Jesus, drive far from me temptations and occasions for stumbling.
Jesus, establish me in faith and love for You.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

Our fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. I am the Bread which cometh down from heaven which, if any man eat thereof, he shall live forever. And the Bread which I will give is My Flesh, which I will give for the life of the world," You said to the Jews that sought to see from You a sign from heaven like unto the manna of Moses, and hearing and beholding the fulfillment of the prophecy, we cry out with fear: Alleluia!

Having risen from the supper, as the holy John relates, and girded Yourself with a towel, You washed the feet of the disciples, thereby teaching us that we ought not to approach Your divine Table in our sins unwashed by tears of repentance. Mindful of my great need for this mystical ablution and of the dearth of tears of my hardened heart, with Peter I cry to You:

Jesus all-good, wash not only my feet, but my hands and head as well.
Jesus, lay bare before me the abyss of my soul's corruption;
Jesus, open within me the floodgates of heartfelt contrition;
Jesus, bedew me with the drops of Your loving-kindness;
Jesus, wrap me about with the fear of the judgment and the eternal torments;
Jesus, awaken within me my sleeping conscience and strengthen its voice.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

"Is this not Jesus, the Son of Joseph, Whose father and mother we know? How is it, then, that He says: I came down from heaven? How can He give His Flesh to eat?" said the Jews among themselves, on hearing Your glorious promise to give Yourself as food to the faithful, unable in the hardness of their hearts to believe with humility and cry out to You: Alleluia!

"Except ye eat the Flesh of the Son of man, and drink His Blood, ye have no life in you," You told the Jews that were slow to believe, and this saying was shown to be hard to accept even for some of Your disciples that were yet ignorant of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. But we, illumined with light of the Gospel and beholding Your divine glory with face unveiled, cry out to You with faith and love:

Jesus, Who can do everything through the greatness of Your power and dominion;
Jesus, Who creates and perfects more then we can understand and comprehend;
Jesus, Who once rained down manna from heaven as a sign of the present Mystery;
Jesus, Who poured forth water from a rock as a prefiguring thereof.
Jesus, Who sent a cloud of quail as food for the Jews, who were starving in the wilderness;
Jesus, Who before the very eyes of the doubting did satisfy five thousand men with five loaves of bread.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

While eating Your supper with Your disciples, taking bread, and blessing and breaking it, You gave it to them, saying: "Take, eat; this is My Body, which is broken for you for the remission of sins." And thereafter, having given them the Cup, You said: "Drink ye all of it: this is My Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins." Hearkening to this divine and most sweet voice, with thanksgiving we cry: Alleluia!

He who eateth My Flesh, and drinketh My Blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him. He hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day, which is at the resurrection of life and blessedness. Wherefore, seeking to be vouchsafed this longed-for resurrection unto life, from the depths of my soul I cry to You:

Jesus, draw nigh unto one that seeks union with You:
Jesus, enter into my inmost parts, into all my members and bones.
Jesus, be a light unto my darkened mind;
Jesus, fill the abyss of my heart which the whole world cannot satisfy, with Yourself alone;
Jesus, speak through the voice of my conscience; Jesus, stir and guide my will.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

"Verily, verily, I say unto you that one of you shall betray Me," You said in anguish of spirit to the disciples at supper. And though they were innocent of any intention to betray You, each of them asked: "Lord is it I?" showing thereby the depth of their humility. But what can I say when I fall and betray You seven times a day? Yet keep me Yourself, that I may not fall away utterly, but cry to You thankfully: Alleluia!

"As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in Me. He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit." Thus, working wonders You taught Your beloved disciples on the way to Gethsemane. Therefore, attending to this instruction, and knowing the weakness of my nature without Your grace, I earnestly cry:

Jesus, most heavenly Husbandman, plant me in Your life-bearing garden.
Jesus, true vine, graft me to Yourself like a wild branch;
Jesus, unwithering root, fill me with the sap of eternal life;
Jesus, Vanquisher of all mortality, clear away that which has been dried up within me by the heat of the passions.
Jesus, beautiful goodness, adorn me with the flowers of good thoughts and feelings;
Jesus, rich in mercy, enrich me with the fruits of true repentance and righteousness.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

"To the disciple who at the supper leaned upon Your breast and asked: "Who is it that betrayeth Thee?" You answered: "He it is to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it." And, having dipped the bread, You gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to move him to repentance. But, being hardened by the spirit of malice, he had no desire to understand his Lord and Master's voice of love. May I be delivered by Your grace from such hard-heartedness, by crying to You: Alleluia!

Taking pity on the weakness of our nature, which turns away from eating human flesh, You was well-pleased to bestow upon us Your all-pure Body and Blood not manifestly, but under the appearance of Bread and Wine, most wisely ordering the whole matter of our salvation in Your love for mankind, O Jesus, and accommodating Your most saving Mysteries to the weakness of our comprehension and senses. Marvelling at this condescension of Your wisdom to the weakness of our nature, I thankfully glorify You thus:

Jesus, Who in Thy wisdom and love for mankind arranges all things for our salvation;
Jesus, Who adapts Your most saving Mysteries to the weakness of our understanding and senses.
Jesus, Who for the assurance of the doubting has many times manifested Your very Body and Blood at the holy Table, instead of bread and wine.
Jesus, Who has shown to worthy ministers of the altar the Holy Spirit descending for the consecration of the Gifts;
Jesus, Who instead of unworthy ministers of the altar sends invisibly Your holy Angels for the celebration of the Divine Mysteries.
Jesus, Who through the manifestation of miracles at the holy Table, has converted to faith many of the impious.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

And after the sop - that is, after the traitor had eaten the bread You gave him - as the holy John relates, Satan entered into him. Oh, what a dreadful punishment for unbelief! Oh, how unhappy the lot of the traitor! What should have been for his salvation is turned into death and damnation for him. Bowing reverently before this judgment of Your righteousness, with fear and trembling I cry to You: Alleluia!

"Do this in remembrance of Me," You said to Your disciples at the supper, giving them Your Body under the appearance of Bread, and Your Blood under the appearance of wine. For as often as we eat this bread, and drink this cup, we show forth Your death, according to the word of the holy Paul. And now, remembering Your Passion, with compunction I cry to You:

Jesus, Who for the salvation of the world gave Yourself over voluntarily into the hands of Your enemies;
Jesus, Who did not allow legions of angels to appear in Your defense;
Jesus, Who with a glance and with the crowing of a cock converted to repentance an unfaithful disciple;
Jesus, Who made no reply to Caiaphas and Pilate who questioned You foolishly.
Jesus, Who from the Cross asked the Father to forgive the sins of them that crucified You;
Jesus, Who in Your surpassing loving-kindness gave Your beloved disciple to Your Mother as a son.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

"Judas, betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss?" You sadly cried out to Your unfaithful disciple, when he came with a detachment of troops into the Garden of Gethsemane seeking to betray You with a kiss. But even these poignant words did not strike his soul, hardened in evil, with repentance. And, knowing the inconstancy of mine own will, I fear lest at any time I too give You the kiss of Judas, ungrateful as I am. But strengthen me by Your grace, that with the good thief I may ever cry out: Alleluia!
"I pray that they all may be one, as Thou. Father, art in Me and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe." Thus You exclaimed in Your last great prayer to the Father. Following this, Your voice most sweet, and trusting in the power of Your prayer, with faith I cry to You:

Jesus, Who gathers all together as one, unite us all inseparably with You and Your Father;
Jesus, grant that we all abide in oneness of mind, in faith and in love for You.
Jesus, Who cannot abide enmity and division, destroy impious heresies and schisms;
Jesus, Who loves and has mercy upon all, gather all the lost sheep into one flock.
Jesus, Who gives peace to all, allay the envy and gainsaying among them that call upon Your name;
Jesus, Who gives me the Communion of Your very Body and Blood, may I be truly flesh of Your Flesh and bone of Your Bones.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

By turning water into wine at the wedding supper in Cana of Galilee, You manifested the first sign of Your divine power. Then, when about to depart to the Cross as the Bridegroom of souls, You manifested to them that believe the last miracle of Your love, by changing bread into Your Body; and wine into Your Blood, and nurtured thereby unto life eternal, I, too, thankfully cry out to You: Alleluia!
On the day of Your resurrection, accompanying in the guise of a traveller two of Your disciples on the way to Emmaus, You instructed them in the mystery of Your Passion; but their eyes were restrained that they should not recognize You, though their hearts burned within them at the sweetness of Your words. But when, bowing to their request, You went to tarry with them, and having blessed the Bread, gave It to them, straightway their eyes were opened and they recognized You. Like those disciples, I, too, humbly make bold to raise my voice to You and shout:

Jesus long-suffering, forsake me not on the path of life because of the insufficiency of my faith.
Jesus, teach me, like them, to understand the prophecies concerning You and the mystery of union with You by grace;
Jesus, warm and inflame my cold heart, as You did those of Your disciples.
Jesus all-good, abide also with me, for the day of my life is far spent and it is towards evening.
Jesus, grant me to know You truly in the present breaking of the mystical Bread and in drinking from the Chalice;
Jesus, grant that even I, perceiving the power of Your love, may become a proclaimer thereof to my brethren.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

You have promised to give to eat of the Tree of Life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God, to him that is victorious, and of the hidden manna. May I be prepared on earth for this heavenly fare by the Communion of Your Body and Blood, which as I now unworthily approach, I cry: Alleluia!

He that eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Body and Blood of the Lord: so did the heaven-rapt Paul admonish them that approach for Communion. Wherefore, I, too, fear and tremble at mine unworthiness; yet lest, by separating myself for long from Your Communion, I fall prey to the spiritual wolves, I draw nigh to You with such a cry:

Jesus, receive me, as You received the publican, the harlot and the thief
Jesus, disdain not to enter under the roof of my soul, though it is all empty and fallen;
Jesus, open the eyes of my soul, as You opened the eyes of the man that was blind from birth;
Jesus, say to me too, as to the paralytic: Arise and walk;
Jesus, staunch the flow of the impure desires of my soul as You staunched the flow of the woman with an issue of blood;
Jesus, heal the leprosy of my soul and conscience.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

Through the envy of the devil who spoke through the mouth of the serpent, and through the eating of the forbidden fruit, the whole human race lost paradise and was given over to death. But by receiving Your most pure Body and Blood all men are again vouchsafed eternal life and rise up to their former state. For the Communion of Your life-creating Mysteries are an antidote against the venom of the serpent and is the seed of immortality. Wherefore, I thankfully cry out to You: Alleluia!

Lo! I stand before the vessel which holds Your divine Mysteries, yet I put not away mine evil thoughts. Your almighty grace alone heartens me and draws me on. Then, casting myself into the abyss of Your loving-kindness, I cry out:

Jesus, Who calls all that labour and are heavy laden to rest in You, receive me, who labour under the vanity of this world.
Jesus, Who came to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance, absolve me of my sins and passions;
Jesus, Who heals every infirmity and disease, heal the wounds and festering of my soul.
Jesus, Who satisfied the hungry, feed me with Your Body and Blood;
Jesus, Who raised the dead, quicken me who have been slain by my sins.
Jesus, Conqueror of hell, rescue me from the jaws of the spirit of malice.
Jesus, God of my heart, come and unite me to Yourself forever.

O Jesus most sweet and all-compassionate, Who forever descends like manna from heaven to nourish our souls and hearts in the mystery of Thy most pure Body and Blood: vouchsafe me to partake without condemnation Your Divine Mysteries, that, being redeemed, healed, nurtured, and sanctified by You forever, I may thankfully cry:

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

M aster and Lord, Jesus Christ our God, You alone have authority to forgive my sins, whether committed knowingly or in ignorance, and make me worthy to receive without condemnation Your divine, glorious, pure and life-giving Mysteries, not for my punishment, but for my purification and sanctification, now and in Your future Kingdom. For You, Christ our God are compassionate and love mankind and to You we give glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit now and forever and ever.
Amen.
